Mariann's musingsposted on 11 June 2011Saturday at 4pm and I am disturbed from my siesta by the telephone. A friend, colleague, neighbour, son? No, a charity worker requesting me to increase my monthly subscription to their cause. A cultured voice explains the need for more money from me. And I say: "No!" There is a surprised note in the tone of Amy's voice as she ploughs through the reasons why the extra money is needed. Again I say: "NO!" While I realise the need for extra cash, I have read that these firms take the first three months of my precious money to fund their campaign, but I don't mention this. Why bother? However, I do explain that I give as much as am able to various charities but hate to be harassed into giving more. In fact, say I, if I receive more than two telephone calls I stop my subscription. End of. She gushes with thanks for what I already donate and leaves me in peace. Image: Idea go / FreeDigitalPhotos.net
